1966 Sunbeam Tiger MK1A
VIN: 382000891
The Sunbeam Tiger is a high-performance V8 version of the British Rootes Group's Sunbeam Alpine roadster, designed in part by American car designer and racing driver Carroll Shelby and produced from 1964 until 1967. Just over 6400 Tiger MK1 cars were produced from 1964-1966, with most of them marketed and sold in the US. The MK1A, saw production of only 2706 units from August 1965-February 1966. According to Sunbeam records, the car presented at auction was the 890th MK1A to roll off the assembly line.
All Mk I and 1A Tigers have a 164 hp, 260-cu-in Ford V-8, with modifications to jam it into place under the hood, including a remote oil filter. All of these cars were built with a two-barrel carburetor. Most owners placed orders from the “LAT catalog”—for Los Angeles Tigers, a subsidiary of Ian Garrand’s International Automobiles Incorporated—with everything from hotter cams, Edelbrock intake, and a Holley four-barrel carburetor. Those parts would be installed at the port, mostly in Long Beach, California or Long Island, New York, then on to their final destination.
The 1966 Sunbeam Tiger presented at auction was acquired as a project car by a discerning car collector and restorer. He went about gathering many of the components from the LAT Catalog to build his car to the specs he desired. The car was completely restored to a very high standard and remains in excellent condition. The representative of the estate, through extensive review, reports the identifiable and estimated LAT components on this car are listed below:
Fiberglass Engine Hood
Polished Aluminum Wheels
Tiger Valve Covers
Tachometer
Exhaust Manifolds
Exhaust System
Intake Manifold and Carburetor
Traction Controls
Bell Housing
While the engine was rebuilt, the only way to verify the internal components would be to tear the engine down. Same with the limited slip differential gears and the heavy duty clutch assembly.
This Sunbeam Tiger comes with the soft top that is in excellent condition as well as with a hard top that is not yet restored, needing paint and headliner. The representative does indicate the hood paint is in need of attention with very slight bubbling present. A can of matching paint is available with the car. Also included with the car are numerous manuals and literature and well as extensive receipts chronicling the restoration.
These Sunbeam Tigers are very collectible and have limited availability. This car will be a fine addition to any collection and/or to enjoy!
